Sun, 10 Oct 2010 14:43:42 -0700 Nikon 18-200mm - simply brilliant! http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/nikon-18-200mm-simply-brilliant http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/nikon-18-200mm-simply-brilliant http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200.htm

What a wonderful lens this is.  Versatile and opens a lot of doors to photos you would otherwise miss.  When you have to change your lens, you are losing time and could miss photo's.  If you have an 18-55 and 55-200, think how often you have swapped lenses, when this could free up that time.

As always, Ken has a good verdict and some sample photos to check out.

Wed, 06 Oct 2010 14:39:00 -0700 Digital Sports Photography - Wrestling http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/digital-sports-photography-wrestling http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/digital-sports-photography-wrestling

Some photos I took recently at a wrestling match, I'm pleased with the results - they were taken using a Nikon D5000 with a Sigma external flash and 55-200mm Nikkor VR lens.  The flash was put at 1/2 and on manual because it was coming out too dark and around ISO 800 minimum to capture the action.

Post your comments and thoughts if you like these pics :)

Thanks, Simon.

Thu, 30 Sep 2010 10:07:41 -0700 What about printing? http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/what-about-printing http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/what-about-printing Many people are happy to take lots of digital photographs, but not many people have them printed and put on the wall - it's not so much the done thing.  If you do have a really nice photo you want printing, yes you can get it done while you shop at your local supermarket all in one machine...  But it lacks that superiority that the "pro's" prints have.

Problem solved...  possibly regarded as the best place to get prints done, and for many years now - Previously known as Colab and now One Vision Imaging, you can get professional printing (not like professional, actually professional) at a reasonable cost.  It doesn't stop at gloss or matte either...  You can get a full blown canvas if you like but check out what they offer if you want something special.

This is a great explanation of how aperture works and you should definitely watch it through to get a good understanding.

For digital sports photography, this is particularly useful to know why you should shoot with a wide aperture, and why most sports photographs have such a shallow focusing.

Ever wandered how you can get GPS info on your photos without  spending thousands on a top end SLR with the ability built in?

Thanks to my friend Greg Langford, who suggested the below when we were out cycling and taking HDR photos at Willen Lake, you can get this useful ability and even track your routes on Google Maps to share!  Check it out:

Sun, 12 Sep 2010 12:28:06 -0700 Accepting Responsibility Is The First Step To Great Photos http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/accepting-responsibility-is-the-first-step-to http://mastering-digital-photography.posterous.com/accepting-responsibility-is-the-first-step-to

Great photographers receive criticism of some kind, what makes them great is that they accept responsibility for their mis haps and errors and grow because of it.

In order to get the best photos, you need to accept responsibility if your photos do not come out well.  You cannot blame the lighting / weather / time of day or any other variable I'm sure you can think of.  Once you accept responsibility, you can move forwards past your blocks because you won't fear responsibility behind the camera.

Breaking down your mental barriers and blocks or other fears is what will lead you to taking more original and creative photos.
